KOLKATA: Aizawl earned their first win in the eighth edition of the Mizoram Premier League as they beat table-toppers Mizoram Police 1-0 in the third round at Lammual on Tuesday.
It was a hard-fought win for the defending champions as Rochharzela scored the only goal of the match in the dying minutes of the first half and was duly awarded with the Man-of-the-Match award.
Te-a played the ball from the left past a defender towards Rochharzela, who was standing near the edge of the box.
The No. 7 received it well and took his time before slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner with his weak foot between the two defenders. Although the shot was a little weak, the goalkeeper couldn’t keep it out despite his best efforts.
Aizawl coach Stanley Rosario was more than happy with the win over the table toppers but is concerned about the team’s inability to convert the chances. “Scoring is a big concern and we need to work on it. We create many chances but are unable to score,” said Rosario on Friday.
With this win Aizawl have five points from three matches and will next take on Chanmari on Tuesday while Mizoram Police will face off against Ramhlun North on Wednesday.
In the second match of the day, Venghnuai beat Ramhlun North FC 1-0 thanks to Lalruatfela’s goal in the 56th minute.
Earlier on Thursday, Chhinga Veng and Chanmari played out a 2-2 draw. Lalrammuanpuia opened the scoring for Chanmari two minutes after half-time but MC Malsawmzuala scored two goals in quick succession to put Chhinga Veng in the lead. To the dismay of Chhinga Veng supporters, Vanlalchhunga scored an own goal three minutes from time and the match ended all square.
In another match, Electric Veng beat Chawnpui 3-1 thanks to goals from Vanlalremkima, Ramhlunchhunga and David Lalchhuanawma. For Chawnpui, Lalnumawia scored the solitary goal in the 37th minute but it was not enough.
