KOLKATA: Aizawl FC have been mediocre to say the least in the current edition of the I-League. They are placed ninth in the standings with eight points from seven games. They have won and lost one and have drawn five matches, including four on the trot. But with more than half the season still left to play, Aizawl coach Stanley Rosario hasn’t given up hope and has brought in a new foreigner, Justice Morgan from Nigeria, to boost the squad.

Morgan played for George Telegraph in the Calcutta Football League last season and scored a vital goal to help them beat Kolkata giants East Bengal in the group stages. It won’t be his first stint in Aizawl as he had earlier helped them lift their maiden Mizoram Premier League crown in 2015 and played an integral role in clinching promotion to I-League premier division.
Morgan will have to work in tandem with Abdoulaye Kanoute to make sure the chances created don’t go to waste. Although Aizawl have scored nine goals in seven matches, they have failed to convert many good chances which have resulted in so many draws and its one area that has kept the Aizawl coach worried throughout the season.
There is also a rumour that the former I-League champions are planning to sign another foreigner, Argetina’s Matias Veron. The Argentine attacking midfielder, who played for Argentine club Juventud Unida RC in the last season, is currently undergoing trial at the club and a final decision will be taken if he is able to impress the coach.
Aizawl meanwhile have parted ways with Mali’s Amadou Alou Sissoko after a mutual understanding.
The northeast team will return to action in the I-League on January 25 when they take on TRAU FC in the Northeast derby at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal. In their last match against Churchill Brothers, they were held to a 2-2 draw at home.
