KOLKATA: Khokon Mollah of Kolkata seized the lead in the amateur category after the opening day of the Shillong Amateur meet at Shillong Club on Saturday. Khokon Mollah carded 72 while Pratham Choudhary from Jamshedpur was one shot off the pace after he hit 73.
The tournament is part of the second edition of the IGU Eastern India Amateur Feeder Tour which has 12 events under its umbrella. The Shillong Amateur is the ninth event on the Tour this year.
The tournament has five categories: amateur, mid-amateur, senior, super senior and ladies.
There are also special categories for junior golfers of 18 and nine holes, respectively.
KI Singh and Brightstar Kurbah were in share of the lead in the mid-amateur section after they hit identical cards of 78. There is expected to be stiff competition between Girish Chandra Das and Tony Curtis Lyngdoh in the senior category of the tournament. While Girish Chandra Das carded 87 in the opening round on Saturday, Tony Curtis Lyngdoh was just one shot behind him at 88.
However, the same level of contest might not be visible in the super senior section. Anil Pargal hit 78 in the opening round to seize a comfortable six-stroke lead over his nearest competitor.
Pooja Goenka is at the top of the leaderboard in the ladies category with her card showing 89 after the first day. Meanwhile, in the special junior categories, Shaurya Goenka leads the 18-hole division after hitting 87 while Ryan Lyngdoh carded 53 to be at the top of the nine-hole section.
