When you are a traveller, you don’t believe in being at places that are overtly crowded and commercially hit. A traveller seeks solace in silence, he looks out for destinations that are virgin, a place that is surrounded with beauty and not tourists. One such destination is Serchhip, a lesser-known and unexplored town in the north-eastern state of Mizoram.
Serchhip, translates to ‘citrus on top’, is around 112 km away from the state capital, Aizawl. The town got its name from the numerous citrus trees found on top of the hill of the district. Set at an elevation 2913 ft above sea level, this place lies between Mat and Tuikum rivers, which add to the beauty of the destination. As per historical records, a Mizo chief is responsible for the early settlement at Serchhip.

One of the best kept secrets of Mizoram, Serchhip makes for a perfect offbeat destination for travellers always in search of lesser explored places. Let us have a look at the prominent places to visit in and around Serchhip.
Vantawng Khawhthla or Vantawng Falls

Vantawng Khawhthla is the highest waterfall in Mizoram and, probably, the most spectacular one too. Crisscrossing its way through huge boulders and rocks, this picturesque waterfall falling from a height of 220 m, is named after Vantawnga, who was a celebrated swimmer in the region. It is said that he was so good that he used to perform some really dangerous water stunts with complete ease. However, during one of his performances here, a log fell on his head and he died on the spot. After this fatal accident, people of the region named the waterfall after him.

Zoluti Hriatrengna Lung

Lung in Mizo refers to ‘Stone’, and Hratrengna to ‘Memory’, so Zoluti Hriatrengna Lung is basically a memorial stone built in memory of Zoluti, also known as Mary Winchester. She was the daughter of Dr. Winchester, who was a manager in one of the tea gardens in the region. It is believed that she was captured and held captive by Britishers back in the year 1872.

Chhingpuii Thlan

Thlan means ‘tomb’ and Chhingpuii Thlan is a stone tomb built in the memory of two lovers. Legend has it that Chhingpuii was the prettiest woman in the entire region. She was peacefully and happily living with husband, but her happiness was short-lived as soon the village was hit by the civil war (1877 to 1880). The woman was kidnapped and later got killed in the war. Shocked and depressed with the incident, her husband, Kaptluanga too committed suicide. Later, this stone memorial was built to remember their love for each other.

Thenzawl Deer Park

This park is dedicated to the conservation of deer and is considered one of the best tourist attractions in Serchhip. Now, it’s a deer park, where one can watch these beautiful animals taking a leisurely stroll.

Chawngchilhi Puk

This one is basically a cave located in the middle of mountains and trees in Sirchhip. The region is quite famous among the ardent bird watchers and animal lovers. The green areas and gorgeous mountains add to the beauty of this place. The cave holds a lot of mysteries and mysterious tales are about a woman, who fell in love with a serpent and later gave birth to its child in the cave. Strange stories travel here!

Best time to visit Serchhip

Though the weather remains pleasant here most time of the year, the period between March and October is considered the best to visit Serchhip.

How to reach Serchhip?

The nearest airport serving the town is around 90 km away in Aizawl city. From the airport, one can book a cab, shared taxi or bus to reach Serchhip.
