Jaipur to become ‘no construction zone’ in an effort to get UNESCO heritage site tag

The walled city of Jaipur will soon be declared by the state government as a ‘no construction zone’, thereby putting a stop to all types of construction in the walled city area. This move by the Rajasthan Government is looked upon as a move to get the walled city recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Referring to this development, a senior administration official stated that a committee consisting of a panel of experts will be constituted. People will have to get prior permission from the committee for any construction or renovation.

As per the new development, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) is expected to soon issue a notification under the Building By Laws 1970. Once the city turns into a no-construction zone, a complete ban will be imposed on any construction or even renovation by families settled there.

Some of the prime roadblocks that are getting in the way of the walled city’s desired status are traffic congestion, and encroachments. Also, unplanned constructions have been one of the reasons adding to its misery. All these components add up which ultimately fail the city of Jaipur to meet the standards specified by UNESCO.

A high-level meeting was held recently to discuss this issue, after which it was decided that the city will be divided into four parts for traffic permits. Shopkeepers and locals will also not be allowed to build any structures or renovate their building. In fact, for any kind of construction, a sanction will be required from a high-power committee of official and experts.

A government official also mentioned that the government will be preparing draft rules to ensure that the original architecture of the city is not tampered with; a JMC heritage cell will be monitoring the same, and multiple cameras will be installed to monitor illegal constructions.
