In a commendable act towards keeping country clean and plastic-free, Puducherry government has decided to put a ban on single-use plastic from March 1. Plastic is a big problem in the city and Puducherry being a tourist destination collects a huge amount of plastic waste, which is harming the environment.
People can see piles of plastic garbage everywhere on the roads and also at the prime tourist hotspots, which was creating a lot of pollution. The collected plastic pile is then thrown in the landfills but are not recycled, again a cause of major concern. To get rid of issues, the government has decided to put a permanent ban on single-use plastic.
Chief Minister of Puducherry, V Narayanasamy, recently mentioned that they want to gift a plastic-free Puducherry to the future generation. In addition, they wish to curb plastic in the larger interest of the environment.
It was inspired by the act of neighbouring state Tamil Nadu, wherein the government said to ban the use of plastic items from January 1, 2019, to gift future generation a plastic-free state. It also included non-biodegradable carry bags.
To make people aware of the ill-effects of plastic, the public and traders will be carrying out a massive campaign soon. However, the Puducherry Traders Federation is not supportive of the plastic ban. In fact, they have warned the authorities against it and will also protest for same. According to the federation, the ban should not just affect local industries but multinational companies too. The ban will certainly affect the industry
Taking the ban seriously and forward, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also put a ban on single-use plastic at 129 airports across India. As per the Quality Control of India, 16 airports have already banned single-use plastic, which is simply commendable.
