Shillong gets an ultra-modern orchidarium to boost eco-tourism in the region

In a first, Shillong gets a state-of-the-art orchidarium in Upper Shillong in a move to enhance eco-tourism in the region. Being home to some of the most exotic species of floras, and blessed with favourable climatic conditions, this Northeastern state now has an additional point of interest for its visitors.

The orchidarium has been constructed within a span of three months, which will be housing more than 20 varieties of orchids that are found in Meghalaya and its neighbouring cities. This region in fact boasts of being home to a wide range of orchid species. And if records are to go by, there are around 17000 species of orchids in the world, whereas 1250 varieties are available in India. Quite interestingly, 300 species of orchids are found in Meghalaya.

As per the latest news reports, the opening of the orchidarium witnessed a large number of visitors from almost every corner of the country, and it is expected that this might likely generate employment and also boost income of small-scale flower farmers.

As per a visitor, the orchidarium has already become one of the popular tourist spots in the region. Further, Meghalaya being one of the popular tourist hotspots, people will now get an opportunity to visit the orchidarium and learn about the many varieties of orchids. The visitor also added that because of climate change, orchids are reducing in number, and therefore, having this kind of facility will help protect these exotic plants.

While the orchidarium is unique, this option will further lead to the production of orchids in large quantities, opening path for business avenues with a proper supply chain.

It is also expected that the establishment will go a long way to educate educating people about these exotic plants and help preserve the fragile eco-system of the country as a whole.
