Quite interestingly, this year’s list of most expensive cities has been graced by three cities. While Singapore continues to hold to its top position tight, Paris and Hong Kong also squeezed in this year to share the said top spot. This happened for the first time in history that three cities shared the top slot simultaneously as reported by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

As per this annual survey, the EIU researchers evaluated the cost of 150 items in 133 cities across the globe, including the cost of clothing, food, utility bills and transportation costs. The survey has been technically designed to help companies calculate the cost of living allowances and build compensation packages for business travellers and expatriates.

As per the latest news reports, the top ten list was dominated by Asian and European countries, with Zurich capturing the fourth slot, Osaka and Geneva claiming the fifth position, and Seoul and Copenhagen settling with the seventh position.

Referring to this development, the EIU also mentioned that a growing number of locations are becoming cheaper because of the political impact and economic disruption.

Asia’s economic divide was, however, underscored with Bangalore grabbing 129th position, Karachi 127th, Chennai 125th and New Delhi finally settling at the 123rd slot ranking near the bottom. EIU talking about this said if put simply, cheaper cities, however, tend to be less liveable.

The EIU further stated that one of the factors behind Asia’s strong show at the chart was because some of the Asian cities are among the world’s priciest locations for general grocery shopping.
