Take a look at history

Adventure in the Indian Ocean – things to do in Port Blair

Port Blair has some of the most interesting places to explore in terms of history. The very first place in your list to visit should be the Cellular Jail National Memorial, which was once a British prison. It was constructed way back in 1896 and the construction went on until 1906. You would be interested to know that some of the wings of the original jail were destroyed by the Japanese during the World War II. You would know this place as the dreaded Kala Pani where Indian freedom fighters were sent by the British. Batukeshwar Dutt, who bombed the Central Legislative Assembly alongside Bhagat Singh, was a notable prisoner of this prison.

Yet another interesting slice of history one can find here is a World War II bunker that reminds us of the Japanese occupation of the place during the World War II.

Go on an adventure to Ross Island

You can take a ferry that leaves every 15 minutes from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex here at Port Blair. There are package tours available as well. Here, at Ross Island, one of the most important things to visit is the old Presbyterian Church. The history of Ross Island is dearly exciting, as it used to the base for British rule in Port Blair, and was in fact converted into a Prisoners of War (POW) camp by the Japanese. You can still see ruins of that incredible historical era. The island boasts a bakery that is supposedly very good, so do try it.

A walk on Corbyn’s Cove

Only 8 km away from Port Blair, this is where you come to for a nice day out. A piece of sandy land by the ocean, it is surrounded by palm trees. It is a pretty scenic destination, and is worth the trip, especially for those who like water sports, and you could even swim here. You could also head to snake island from here, but remember that it has a reputation for having deadly snakes, as the name suggests.

Port Blair can be a revelation for people who are unacquainted with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in terms of experiences and also food. So do try the cuisine here, it is delightful.
