Today in history: Goa, Daman and Diu were annexed to India from Portuguese rule

Goa, Daman and Diu, situated on the coast of Arabian Sea, were under the Portuguese rule for over 400 years, until 1961. In 1961, the Indian govt conducted a military invasion in Goa, Daman and Diu to free them from Portuguese rule. The name of the operation was ‘Operation Vijay’ that was conducted on air, land and water. After 36 hours of fighting, the Portuguese forces retreated. On December 19, 1961 Goa, Daman and Due came under the Indian constitution. Goa, Daman and Due are now Union Territories of India.
