The Houston Texans added more depth at cornerback by signing Derrick Jones, but released Stephen Louis in the process.

The Houston Texans recently added cornerback Jermaine Ponder, and have also added another cornerback with the addition of Derrick Jones.

Jones, who was recently released by the Green Bay Packers after failing a physical, is a bigger cornerback, standing at 6-3, which clearly illustrates what exactly the Texans want in a corner for their secondary. He’s also played for the New York Jets.

Ponder is 6-3 as well, and so is rookie second round draft pick Lonnie Johnson Jr. Like Johnson, Jones is also a wide receiver converted to cornerback, and played both positions at Ole Miss before being drafted in the sixth round by the Jets.

It would seem to be quite possible for Jones to make the roster considering the Texans lack of depth at corner, especially if he embraces playing on special teams. The Texans dealt with a myriad of injuries at cornerback last season, so it would be logical to add depth behind Jonathan Joseph, Brad Roby, Aaron Colvin and Johnson.

Not only were there injuries, but we also don’t know how much to expect Johnson to play this season as there will surely be a transition from the college game for him. We also can’t predict whether Colvin will be able to be a big contributor this season, as he didn’t make an impact at all last year, his first with the Texans and fifth overall season in the NFL.

To make room on the roster for Jones, the Texans released undrafted rookie receiver Stephen Louis. Louis saw action in the Texans preseason game against the Packers as he nabbed three receptions for 24 yards.

Louis played in the second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but did not log a reception in that game. Louis was likely not going to make the roster anyways, as Vyncint Smith and DeAndre Carter seem like a lock for the fourth and fifth receiver spots. There is also rookie Tyron Johnson, who is also turning heads this preseason.

Hopefully, Jones will be able to make the active gameday roster and will be able to provide depth at the cornerback spot for the Texans, because a team can never have too much depth in the secondary.
