The Chief Washakie Plunge at Fort Washakie has always been a favorite and sacred place to the Shoshone Tribe. It was told that one of the reasons why Chief Washakie picked this reservation was because of the hot springs it contained.
We as Indian people have always cherished our hot springs, healing waters that were provided for us. A lot of us remember going to the Plunge to have fun and a lot learned how to swim there, or when we had injuries we would go soak and get well.
The Tribe has been trying to open up the Chief Washakie Plunge for years, going back to 1993. In May 2010, the Tribe hired Lidstone and Associates in Fort Collins, Colorado, to do a geological study on the Plunge and provide recommendations. From the study it was recommended that the present building be demolished, a further geological study to place a future building, remediation for radon gases for an enclosed facility and for the recreational use area, solar heating for the solar heating system.
