Crews make repairs to damage at the intersection of Porter and Walnut streets in Springdale on Monday, July 8, 2019.

Walnut Street in Springdale is expected to remain closed through Wednesday afternoon while crews continue work to repair the street.

Carmen Canonico, head of Springdale’s roads department, said the borough wasn’t able to get the asphalt needed to finish the work on Tuesday. It expected to get the asphalt needed on Wednesday morning.

“The base coat is down,” he said. “We couldn’t get any (asphalt) topper.”

Canonico said the street should reopen Wednesday afternoon. He originally hoped to have the street reopened by Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s out of our control,” he said of the delay.

A portion of Walnut Street at the intersection with Porter Street was damaged after heavy rains Saturday caused water to get into a seam and lift and crack some of the asphalt. Crews began making emergency repairs Monday.

Canonico estimated on Monday that about 30 homes have been affected by the street’s closure. A detour has been set up using Rosa Street.

Walnut Street is a one-way street going toward the damaged end, so the borough is permitting residents to go the wrong way to access Rosa Street while the repairs are being made.
