Weather smiles on Springdale's Fireman's Jubilee after soggy opening

Inclement weather chased people away from the opening night of the annual Fireman’s Jubilee in Springdale, but organizers got a better forecast and extended the family food special to bring people back in droves Tuesday.

The 90-year-old Fireman’s Jubilee is the major fundraiser for the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department.

The family food special was a big draw from about 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday before heavy rain and high winds rolled in, according to Springdale VFD Station 273 Secretary Jeannie Harman.

“That’s why we are having the food specials again Tuesday night. For $20.19, patrons can buy a whole pepperoni pizza, four hot dogs, four drinks and two orders of firefighter fries,” Harman said.

The Fireman’s Jubilee continues through Friday at Veterans’ Field.

On Wednesday, the focus will be on feathers with a live bird show starting at about 6:30 p.m.

Fireworks by Gibson Fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. Thursday.

Friday will feature the firemen’s parade that steps off at 6 p.m. Four parade floats will be judged by three outside residents, and two Springdale veterans being honored will ride in classic cars.

One of the veterans, Einar Sherosky, is 101.

“He’s our oldest citizen,” Harman said.

The other veteran being honored, Emelio Saldari, 94, received his Springdale High School Diploma in April — 76 years after being drafted to serve in World War II before graduating.

Carnival rides and bingo continue each night. Concessions will include hot sausage sandwiches, fresh cut fries, hotdogs, pizza and fish sandwiches sold by firefighters.
