PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A protest that turned violent in Providence early Tuesday morning resulted in damage to several storefronts in the downtown area.
NBC 10 News crews captured images of glass shattered at the Mokban Bistro on Westminister Street. At least three other businesses on the street suffered similar damage.
Demonstrators previously broke into Providence Place mall. The extent of the damage to the mall is not known at this time.
Rioters also set fire to a Providence police cruiser and an SUV in the DCYF parking lot.
Massachusetts State Police have responded to the city. Rhode Island State Police and Providence police have been at the scene since 10:30 p.m.
Crews have seen several people taken into custody.
Protesters started to gather by Providence Place just after 11 p.m.
