Mum smothered five week old baby to death after ignoring warnings about co-sleeping

A mother in the US whose baby son suffocated a week after she ignored a warning not sharing a bed with him has been spared jail.

Genna Aaronson, 33, admitted culpable negligence in the death of her five-week-old baby Clarke Aaronson as part of a plea deal.

Aaronson, from West Palm Beach in Florida, originally faced a charge of negligent manslaughter.

However, she served 300 hours of community service, attended mental health counselling and parenting classes.

Aaronson was not formally convicted, after adjudication was withheld.

Her husband had fallen asleep watching TV with their older child and found the toddler unresponsive when he went to check on his wife and the baby.

According the Palm Beach Post, the toddler's suffocation was described by police as a case of "poor parenting with tragic consequences”.

Aaronson laid the youngster on a pillow on her bed, putting a blanket on top of him and began to watch a film on her phone before falling asleep.

She was only woken up six hours later by her husband, who was screaming after finding their son blue and not breathing.

The baby died an hour after being rushed to hospital.

A coroner determined his death had been caused by "positional asphyxia".

The death came in the week after she had warned her to stop putting the baby in an adult bed.

A report by the Florida Department of Children and Families said: "Both parents were responsible for allowing him to sleep in an unsafe situation which ultimately caused his death."
