IIT Rookee develops portable cold storage

Due to lack of proper arrangement of maintenance of fruits and vegetables in the mountainous areas and not reaching their vegetable markets on time, they are often spoiled. This causes fruits and vegetable growers to suffer a lot. The solution to this problem has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, the portable cold storage. Due to light weight, it can be easily moved from one place to another.

The Rural Technology Action Group (RTAG) of the IIT Roorkee Hydro Renewal Department (HRED) has developed portable cold storage. Under this pilot project, this portable cold storage will be kept at Bernigad village of Barkot tehsil of Uttarkashi district, a small power plant will also be installed to run it.

RP Saini, principal investigator and HRED professor, said that some other fruits and vegetables including tomatoes, peas, ginger, apples are produced in Bernigad and some other villages of Uttarakhand. They did the survey by taking it there.

During this time, through NGOs working there, it was found that people who produce fruits and vegetables do not have proper transport arrangements because of their difficulties in maintenance. It is said that in view of this problem, portable cold storage has been built.

Pro. Saini said that this cold storage made of the insulated panel is between 50 to 60 kg. It is divided into five panels. In this, four to five thousand kilograms of fruits and vegetables can be kept.  He told that its temperature would be kept at four degrees Celsius.

The place near the river has been marked to keep cold storage. Also a small power plant will be installed near the river for its operation. Where three-four kilowatt electricity will be produced to run cold storage.

If this power is not needed in the operation of cold storage, then it will be used in any other work. He said that the test of cold storage has been successfully done in the laboratory.
