If you've ever looked for pickles, or any other kind of pickled item at a Minneapolis farmers market over the years, chances are you've met David Jackson.

Jackson, 73, runs Martha's Joy and every Saturday, you can find him smiling, talking with customers, and selling glass jars of pickled asparagus, green beans, beets, Brussels sprouts and more at the Mill City Farmers Market.

However, David's run at farmers markets in Minneapolis is coming to an end. He'll retire from the Mill City Farmers Market Saturday, August 24 and sell his last pickles on August 25. It's a business started by David's wife Martha, who passed away in 2014.

"She used her great aunt's recipe," he said. "I had never tried them, but used to help my mother make pickles. Martha manipulated the recipe and created a process to make them crunchier."

After Martha died, David continued Martha's Joy in her rememberance.

"Together, we worked for about five years. I kept it going after she passed and it's been nice. I've made a lot of good friends and have had a lot of great customers," he said.

David remarried in June 2019 and will retire back to Alabama. However, he isn't eager to disappear into retirement.

"I'll travel a little bit more, and get a state license to do business in Alabama and Georgia," he said. "I have a kitchen in both Alabama and Georgia, where my daughter lives, and will use those. My daugher may conitnue the business in Georgia."
