COVID-19 India: Positive Cases Cross 10,000 Mark; Death Toll at 339

On Tuesday, April 14, the number of positive coronavirus cases in India crossed the 10,000 mark, as the total cases rose to 10,363. Thus far, 339 individuals have died due to COVID-19, while 1,036 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals across the country.

With the constant increase in the number of positive cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a nationwide address, announced the extension of the lockdown period until May 3, 2020.

Meanwhile, the highest number of cases in India continue to be reported from the state of Maharashtra (2,334), followed by Tamil Nadu (1,173) and Delhi (1,510).

48 new cases take Jaipur tally to 418; Rajasthan total 954

As many as 48 new positive coronavirus cases were reported in Jaipur on Tuesday, which took the state capital's tally to 418. Rajasthan’s total number of cases has since risen to 954, said Additional Chief Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh. Jodhpur, at 82, has the second-highest coronavirus patients, with Tonk and Banswara registering 59 cases each. Overall, COVID-19 cases have been reported in 25 of Rajasthan’s 33 total districts.

The state has witnessed a total 11 deaths, including five in Jaipur, two in Bhilwara, and one each in Bikaner, Kota, Tonk, and Jodhpur.

Noida registers 16 new cases

Despite strict containment measures, Noida witnessed a surge in the number of coronavirus cases, as 16 new ones were recorded on Monday, April 14. A total of 244 people were tested in Noida, out of which 228 were reported negative, while 16 individuals tested positive for the virus. Among the 80 coronavirus cases in Noida thus far, 13 have been cured, 9 more will be discharged soon, while 58 continue to undergo treatment.

A senior doctor becomes first COVID-19 case in Meghalaya

A senior doctor in Shillong was tested positive for novel coronavirus on Monday night, effectively becoming the first COVID-19 case in Meghalaya. Moreover, he has also become the first doctor in northeast India to contract the virus. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in separate tweets, said that in view of the confirmed COVID-19 case in Meghalaya, the government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Shillong and Nongpoh, a commercial city.

"I urge citizens not to panic. We are closely monitoring the situation and we are prepared to deal with it," Sangma said. The Meghalaya cabinet will meet on Tuesday to review the situation.

The hospital has been turned into a quarantine centre, and the hospital staff, family members of the doctor, and the attendants who visited the hospital will be tested immediately.

3-month-old tests positive for coronavirus in Basti, UP

A three-month-old baby in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh has tested positive for coronavirus, becoming the youngest patient in the state. The baby's sample, along with that of his mother, was sent for testing to Gorakhpur Medical College; the reports were received on Monday night, in which the baby tested positive for the virus. The mother's report is still awaited. In the meantime, both have been placed in an isolation ward in the hospital.

The mother and child are related to the youth who had died of COVID-19 in Gorakhpur on March 30, and live in Millat Nagar area, which has been marked as a coronavirus hotspot. District Magistrate Ashutosh Niranjan said that the tally of coronavirus positive cases in Basti is now 14.
