The India Meteorological Department’s Dehradun office has indicated strong rain activity in Uttarakhand on Monday and Tuesday, including along the Mansarovar and Chardham Yatra routes.
The IMD has issued an orange alert (“be prepared”) for heavy to very heavy rainfall (up to 200 mm) in the next 48 hours in districts like Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Pauri and Dehradun.
Pantnagar, which is on the Mansarovar Yatra route, recorded 37.8 mm rain on Monday morning. There was trace rainfall at Pithorgarh as well while no rain was recorded at Munsiyari. However, at all three places, the IMD has said there could be ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall at isolated places on Monday and Tuesday.
Thunderclouds and light rains are also likely in all sectors of the Chardham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib routes, with the weather bureau on Monday issuing warning of heavy rainfall warnings for Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri districts during the next 24 hours.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra this year is being held between June 8 and September 8. There are two routes leading up to the destination: through Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La Pass (Sikkim). The Chardham Yatra to four pilgrimage sites—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—started from May and will conclude at the end of October 2019.
Uttarakhand experienced light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours, with Kapkot (110 mm) being the rainiest place in the state. Dehradun got 11.8 mm rain over the past 24 hours.
