Heavy rainfall is expected in central Gujarat and southern Saurashtra on Friday and Saturday. The IMD’s Ahmedabad office has forecast heavy rain (64-115 mm) in isolated parts of Porbandar, Junagarh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Dohad, Mahisagar and Aravalli districts. Light to moderate rain is forecast for the rest of the state until then.
A cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra is expected to move northwestward and bring heavy rain over Gujarat on Friday and Saturday, according to Weather.com’s forecast. In addition, the national Met department has noted separate cyclonic circulations over southwest and east Rajasthan and neighbouring areas. Cyclonic circulations are massive areas of atmospheric instability and often give rise to rain-bearing clouds.
On Wednesday morning, no significant 24-hour rainfall was recorded over the state. The observatory at Ahmedabad did not record any rainfall, while Rajkot and Surat also saw zero or negligible rainfall. From Wednesday onward, the IMD has forecast cloudy skies and light rain for Ahmedabad. Temperatures are expected to range from 24-35°C till the end of the month.
Meanwhile, according to the Met department’s latest update, Cyclonic Storm Hikaa has weakened into a deep depression and lay in the Arabian Sea, about 220 km west of Duqm and 110 km west-southwest of Haima (Oman). The storm developed near the Gujarat coast, but subsequently moved towards the Gulf region without causing any major impact on western India.
