A trough stretching from south Maharashtra to southeast Uttar Pradesh is likely to cause a pickup in rainfall activity in northwest India. Among the affected regions will be Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which are likely to experience heavy rain between today and Saturday.

The India Meteorological department has issued orange alerts for 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' in all parts of Bihar for Thursday and Friday, and in eastern UP for Thursday and Saturday. The Weather Channel's meteorology team believes the situation in Bihar needs to be watched even over the weekend. Earlier today Weather.com had forecast heavy rain in Bihar from Saturday midnight to Monday morning, with 50mm rainfall accumulation likely on Sunday alone.

In the last 24 hours, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh registered 54 mm rain. Other eastern districts of the state also got mild rain, with Lucknow airport recording about 13mm until Thursday morning 8.30 am. In Bihar, Gaya got 22.6 mm while Patna received about 12 mm.

The Gangetic region is set to receive more rainfall, as an east-west trough (low pressure region) develops from September 28-30. Weather.com expects rainy weather is expected to continue in the Gangetic Plain for the next 5 days. Maximum temperatures will be 4°C to 8°C lower than normal during this period.

Any rise in river levels will be a risk to watch out for. Last week, heavy rainfall in Eastern UP caused rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Betwa, Chambal, Ghagra and Sharda rivers to rise. Ballia, Ghazipur, Auraiyya, Jalaun and Hamirpur were affected by the ensuing floods, while waterlogging was reported in Varanasi and Allahabad.
