Monsoon Approaches Andaman Islands; Heavy Rains Continue in Northeast India

The humid southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal feeding to the instability of cyclonic circulation over northeast is likely to cause heavy rain and thunderstorm over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are also likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Thursday. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department reported on Thursday that the conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into the South Bay of Bengal, the north Andaman Sea and Andaman Islands during next 48 hours.

A western disturbance (WD) and induced cyclonic over Afghanistan and northern Pakistan is likely to affect the mountainous regions and plains of northern India. The WD produces widespread rain or snow and thunderstorms over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Isolated to scattered rain and dust storms/thunderstorms are also likely over Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.

Isolated rain and thunderstorms likely over Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

A trough over southern India and cyclonic circulation over Kerala and Tamil Nadu leads to the instability over part of south. Karnataka and Kerala are likely to witness scattered rain and thunderstorms. Isolated rain is also possible over Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Parts of Maharashtra and Telangana are likely to witness a maximum temperature of 45°C or more. Maximum daytime temperatures of 40°C or more are likely over the states of Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Air quality will be poor or very poor across the country, especially in major cities like Delhi.

The prevailing cyclonic circulation along with the humid southwesterly winds will continue causing instability over the northeast India. Also, it is likely to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Thursday to Saturday. Although the unstable conditions over the northeast persist through weekend into next week, it will slightly weaken from Sunday.

Monsoon conditions continue to be favorable over southern Bay of Bengal and next 2 or 3 days causing heavy rain and thunderstorms over Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The existing WD with induced cyclonic circulation will continue to affect the north. It may weaken gradually from Saturday, but the instability may prevail until Monday. On Friday, it is likely to cause fairly widespread rain/snow and thunderstorms over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Dust storms/thunderstorms and isolated rain are also likely over Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.

Down south, the trough will continue to cause scattered to fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms likely for the next 5 days. Heavy rain is likely over Karnataka on Friday. Also, scattered rain and thunderstorms is likely over Kerala.

Odisha and Bihar are likely to receive isolated rain and thunderstorms on Friday. Isolated rains are also possible over West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Northern, western, north central, eastern and northeastern India are likely to witness maximum temperatures below normal until Monday. However, maximum temperatures over the plains of northern, western and north central India are likely to be 40°C or more. Maximum temperatures is likely to be above normal over southern India till the weekend, while, minimum temperatures are likely to be near average or above normal across the country.

On Friday, Maharashtra, Odisha and Telangana can witness a maximum temperature of 45°C or more. Maximum temperatures of 40°C or more are also likely over Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Air quality continue to be poor or very poor across the country, especially in Delhi along with the major cities of northern, central, western, eastern and southern India.
