After a rainy weekend that resulted in the death of one person, rain or thundershowers are likely again today in Bengaluru, and other parts of south interior Karnataka, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Isolated places in the region could also experience heavy rainfall, the authorities warn.

In addition to Bengaluru urban and rural, south interior Karnataka includes districts like Mysuru, Ballari, Chikkmagaluru, Davangere and Hassan.

On Monday, Bengaluru could experience cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain. Similar conditions are likely to persist until the end of the week. Maximum and minimum temperatures will range between 33 and 21 degrees Celsius. Coastal Karnataka could also experience rain or thundershowers on Monday, but north interior Karnataka is expected to remain dry, the national Met agency said.

Stormy Weekend

Bengaluru experienced strong rains and winds on both Saturday and Sunday. According to the IMD's regional office, the city got 27 mm rain on Saturday and 37.4 mm rain on Sunday.

On Saturday night, around 9 pm local time, the Garden City was swept by rains and strong easterly winds of around 76 km/h. According to a news report in the Bangalore Mirror, one person was killed after being electrocuted by a snapped wire. In addition, 56 trees were felled by the rain. Meanwhile, rural Bengaluru also recorded over 21mm rain, while Hassan district recorded more than 29mm the same day.

Last night, too, thunderstorm and strong winds uprooted 18 trees across the city. Fallen trees and waterlogged roads hampered traffic in many places. Ganganagar, Koramangala, Hanumanthnagar, RR Nagar, Indiranagar, HSR Layout, Shantinagar, Ashoknagar and Cox Town experienced power cuts on Sunday, according to The Times of India.

Instability over region

The wet, stormy weather is caused by convergence of winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. The IMD has noted the existence of a trough (extended low-pressure region) from Rayalseema in interior Andhra Pradesh, to Comorin (Kanyakumari) in south Tamil Nadu, coupled with a cyclonic circulation over Kerala.

In Tamil Nadu, authorities expect thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 km/h speeds) and lightning in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Sivaganga and Pudukottai districts today.

Meanwhile, there could be light rain across Kerala in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Lakshadweep.
