Coastal Karnataka Likely to Receive Very Heavy Rainfall

Southwest monsoon has advanced into central the Arabian Sea, coastal Karnataka and some areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal.

A cyclonic circulation and related surface low pressure system is located over eastern India on Saturday morning. It is likely to bring up to 50 mm of rainfall in 12 hours over a portion of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Also, another cyclonic circulation is present over northeastern India. The southwesterly humid winds from Bay of Bengal adds to the instability of this cyclonic circulation. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Assam and Meghalaya. While, widespread rain and thunderstorms are also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Westerly humid winds from the Arabian Sea produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over west coast, southern and western India. Heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms are likely over coastal Karnataka and heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Kerala, interior Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan. Also, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to experience isolated rain or snow and thunderstorms.

The heatwave conditions have weakened in the eastern, central and southern parts of India due to rainfall. Maximum temperatures of 40°C or more are possible over some areas of northern, central and western parts of India like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

The air quality is expected to be poor to very poor over northern, central, western, eastern and southern India and especially in major cities like Delhi.

Sunday and Beyond

The southwest monsoon conditions will be further favorable for advance into Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, some areas of Bihar , Jharkhand and Odisha in the next 1 or 2 days.

The prevailing cyclonic circulation over the east and northeast are likely to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya, East Uttar Pradesh and widespread rain and thunderstorms likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Westerly humid winds from Arabian Sea is likely to produce a total rainfall of 50 mm in 12 hours over Jharkhand, Bihar and adjoining area by Monday morning. Also, up to 150 mm of total rainfall is expected for 48 hour over coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal are likely to hit by gusty winds at the speed of 37 kmph.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the mountainous regions of northern India from Sunday. Isolated rain or snow and thunderstorms possible over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Also, isolated rain and thunderstorms possible over Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Maximum temperatures are below normal over northern, central and parts of western and eastern India due to rainfalls for the next 5 days. Maximum temperatures are above normal or near average over southern and northeastern India for the next 5 days. On Sunday, the max temperatures are likely to be 40°C or more in places like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The air quality is expected to be poor to very poor over northern, central, western, eastern and southern India and especially in major cities like Delhi.
