Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Northeast to get Heavy Rainfall

Friday - Nationwide Rain Forecast

The southwest monsoon has advanced into south Rajasthan, large parts of Haryana, north and east Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.

Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Odisha, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Friday - State/Regional Forecast

A surface low-pressure area covers north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Friday morning. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is located over northeast Uttar Pradesh and northwest Bihar. The cyclonic circulation and related low-pressure produce heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms over central and eastern India in the next 24 hours. Total rain of 50-100 mm is possible over east UP and Bihar on Friday.

Another cyclonic circulation is located over Punjab and adjoining areas on Friday morning. This circulation and related low-pressure will produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over northern India this weekend.

Yet another circulation is located over Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining areas on Friday morning. The circulation, a related low-pressure, and the southwesterly humid winds from Bay of Bengal lead to atmospheric instability and produce heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms over northeastern India for the next 24 hours. Total rain of 100-150 mm along with flooding is possible over the northeastern states.

Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya. Also, heavy rain and thunderstorms likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

The westerly humid winds from Arabian Sea produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over western coastal, west and south India. These strong winds over the Arabian Sea cause rough sea conditions off the coast of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Heavy to very heavy rain is possible over coastal Maharashtra and Goa, whereas heavy rain can be expected over coastal Karnataka and interior Maharashtra.

Heatwave conditions are unlikely over India for the next 5 days and more. Maximum temperatures of 40°C or more are possible in regions like west Rajasthan, some areas of Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. High temperature areas are likely to gradually decrease.

Saturday and Beyond

The existing trough and surface low-pressure over northern, north central and northeastern India leads to instability and produces heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms in these regions. The surface low-pressure persists for the next 5 days and more.

Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Jammu & Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh. Also, scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Odisha, Jharkhand, Delhi, interior Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka and Kerala. Besides, isolated rain and thunderstorms possible over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The cyclonic circulation over Punjab continues to produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over northern India this weekend. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Another prevailing cyclonic circulation over Arunachal Pradesh is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northeast with a total precipitation of 200 to 250 mm in the next 48 hours. Unstable conditions over North Eastern India persist for the next 5 days. Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar and Uttarakhand. Also, heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Westerly humid winds from the Arabian Sea lead to unstable conditions over coastal western and southern India. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over coastal Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra and Goa.

Northern, central and eastern India are 2°C to 8°C cooler than normal in this period due to heavy rainfall and clouds. The minimum temperatures over northern, central and eastern India are 1°C to 2°C cooler than normal and the southern India is warmer than usual for the next 5 days. Maximum temperatures of 40°C or more likely over west Rajasthan and some areas of Andhra Pradesh.
