Kerala, Coastal Karnataka to Get Heavy Rainfall

Wednesday - Nationwide Rain Forecast

Southwest monsoon has advanced into south Rajasthan, most of Haryana, large part of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Kerala and coastal Karnataka. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Uttarakhand and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected over Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, coastal Maharashtra, Goa, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. Also, fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and interior Karnataka.

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Telangana and isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, interior Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Wednesday - State/Regional Forecast

A seasonal surface trough persist over northern, north central and northeastern India. The trough covers north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal on Wednesday morning. A cyclonic circulation is located over Punjab and the adjoining areas on Wednesday morning. The circulation and related low-pressure is likely to produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over northern India on Wednesday.

A cyclonic circulation is located over West Bengal, Jharkhand and east Odisha on Wednesday morning. It is likely to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms over eastern India on Wednesday.

Another cyclonic circulation is located over Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This cyclonic circulation along with westerly humid winds from Arabian Sea is likely to produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over southern India. The westerly winds over Arabian Sea also causes rough sea conditions off the coast of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.

Southwesterly humid winds from the Bay of Bengal lead to instability and produce widespread rain and thunderstorms over northeastern India.

Northern and north central India under the trough are 2°C to 8°C cooler than normal in this period. Low temperature areas are likely to gradually decrease and the minimum temperatures over these areas are 1°C to 2°C cooler than normal, too. Western, southern and eastern India are warmer than normal for the next 5 days. Maximum temperature of 40°C or more can be expected over west Rajasthan on Wednesday.

The air quality is likely to be poor or very poor over northern, central, western, and eastern India, especially in major cities like Delhi.

Thursday and Beyond

The persisting cyclonic circulation and related surface low-pressure area over Punjab will continue to bring heavy rain and thunderstorm over northern India on Thursday. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

The cyclonic circulation over West Bengal, Jharkhand and east Odisha is expected to develop and move eastward and it is also likely to produce heavy rain and thunderstorm over eastern India for the next 5 days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely over Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and interior Maharashtra.

The westerly humid winds continue to produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over west coastal and western India. The Westerly winds and unstable conditions over coastal west and south India persist for the duration. Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain and thunderstorms likely over, coastal Maharashtra and Goa. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The southwesterly humid winds from the Bay of Bengal continue to affect northeastern India and the unstable conditions persists for the next 5 days and which is expected to slightly weaken. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Odisha. Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Heatwave conditions are unlikely over entire India for the next 5 days and the maximum temperature of 40°C or more are possible over west Rajasthan for the next 5 days. High temperature areas are likely to gradually decrease.
