Madhya Pradesh and Coastal Karnataka to Receive Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Across the Weekend

Saturday - Nationwide Forecast

The monsoon trough is passing through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and east-central Bay of Bengal. The monsoon will be active with a Low Pressure Area and some cyclonic circulations over Northern, Central and Eastern India.

A cyclonic circulation and related Low Pressure Area has been located over east Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas. The Low Pressure Area will produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

A cyclonic circulation and related Low Pressure Area has been located over Odisha and adjoining areas. The two will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms over Odisha, Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas on Saturday.

Westerly humid winds from the Arabian Sea will persist for the weekend. Humid westerly winds will produce heavy rain and thunderstorms over the west coast of Southern India and bring widespread rain and thunderstorms over coastal Western India in this period.

Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and coastal Karnataka.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms have been forecast over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior Karnataka and Kerala.

Widespread rain and thunderstorms are possible over coastal Maharashtra, Goa and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, whereas fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Sikkim.

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and interior Maharashtra.

Lastly, isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.

Sunday and Beyond - Nationwide Forecast

The cyclonic circulation and related Low Pressure Area located over Odisha will gradually move west-northwestward after Saturday. The Low Pressure Area will produce heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms over Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, and heavy rain and thunderstorms over west Madhya Pradesh and east Gujarat on Monday and Tuesday before weakening.

A cyclonic circulation and related Low Pressure Area is expected to form over northwest Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. The Low Pressure Area will move to West Bengal, Odisha and the adjoining areas on Wednesday. It will produce heavy rain over Eastern India from Wednesday.

Here is the rainfall breakup by intensity for Sunday:

  • Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms: West Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Gujarat and coastal Karnataka.
  • Heavy rain and thunderstorms: Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, interior Karnataka, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Widespread rain and thunderstorms: Coastal Maharashtra and Goa.
  • Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms: Sikkim, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Telangana.
  • Scattered rain and thunderstorms: Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, interior Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • Isolated rain and thunderstorms: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and west Rajasthan.

Max temperatures will run lower than normal over Northern, North Central and Eastern India in this period. Coastal Western India, west coast of Southern India and North Eastern India will be warmer than average for the next 5 days. Max temperatures of 40°C or more are likely over west Rajasthan until Wednesday. Min temperatures are near average all over India in this period, but mountain areas of Northern India will be warmer than normal.
