5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) AMPHAN made landfall on coastal West Bengal on Wednesday afternoon at Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) intensity, leaving low-lying areas drenched. It continues to track toward Northeastern India by way of Bangladesh. It passed Kolkata on Wednesday night. It is likely to be downgraded into a Cyclonic Storm (CS) by Thursday night, but still expected to remain a dangerous storm, as it brings heavy rain across Bangladesh and northeastern India.

Heavy downpours that lead to widespread flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in the up-slope areas remains a major possibility and concern. Gusty winds are also still another concern, as they increase the risk of widespread damage including power outage, fall of trees, and collapse of buildings.

Meanwhile, Kerala and the adjoining areas will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms due to a trough and wind convergence during this forecast period. Isolated heavy falls are possible.

The next Western Disturbance will start to affect the western Himalayan region on Friday night.

Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands & Andaman Sea 17th May. The IMD estimates it will likely further advance into some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman Sea, and Andaman Islands.

Maximum temperatures will be 4°C to 8°C or less lower than average over Eastern India on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, some localised areas in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh may experience over 45°C during this forecast period.
