‘Vayu’ Likely to Travel Northwest and Change Course to West Around Thursday Noon

According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) announcement, the Northern Limit Monsoon (NLM) has further advanced into most parts of Kerala and some more part of Tamil Nadu. IMD also announced that some parts of northeastern India such as Mizoram and parts of Manipur has finally been onset.

The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Vayu’ is located 350kms west to Mumbai. The storm is likely to travel north-northwest with the speed of 9kmph and it may change its course to west around Thursday noon. ‘Vayu’ will maintain its intensity for the next 24 hours. In the next 48 hours Karnataka is likely to receive a total rainfall of 125 mm along its coast, while southwest Gujarat is likely to receive 70 mm of rainfall.

The moist southerly winds from Bay of Bengal continue to bring thunderstorms in the northeast. Parts like Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, can receive a total accumulation of 45 mm during next 48 hours with a possibility of 100 mm of rain locally.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over coastal Maharashtra and Goa. There is also a possibility of fairly widespread rain over Meghalaya, Tripura, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Assam. Snow may mix in at the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

In higher reaches of northern India, a western disturbance (WD) has moved away. Isolated snow or rain and thunderstorms are likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are also likely over Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Maximum temperatures of 45°C or more are likely in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. While max temperatures of 40°C or more likely over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Friday and Beyond

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely to continue over southwestern Gujarat, coastal Maharashtra, Goa, coastal Karnataka, and Kerala. Also, fairly widespread rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Snow may mix in at higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are also likely over West Bengal and Odisha.

Dry conditions will prevail in the higher reaches of the northern India for the next few days. Isolated snow or rain can possibly start from Saturday onwards.

South parts of northern India like Rajasthan will be affected depending on the trajectory of the upcoming storm. The major risks in this region will be dust storms and gusty winds.

While max temperatures of 40°C or more are likely over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The air quality will continue to remain poor or very poor in northern, central, western, eastern, and northeastern India.
