GETTING READY: West Seattle YMCA preparing for reopening

As we start to proceed through reopening so much of what’s been closed because of the virus crisis, the West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) has a message for its members:

We are getting ready to welcome you back to the Y.

We miss you! It’s been hard to be away from the people we care about. Thank you for persevering and doing your part to stay safe and stop the spread of coronavirus. We are so looking forward to welcoming community back to the YMCA of Greater Seattle. Visit the link on our website to learn about what we are planning for your welcome back, as well as where to find updates as more information becomes available.

Due to our Fauntleroy YMCA location being used for summer camp, it will not be reopening immediately for member use. Instead, when we do reopen, we ask that all members utilize the West Seattle location through the summer.

I have friends who live in other states where the gyms have reopened. No group classes, no showers and no childcare. Will that be the case here?

The link says they are expecting Phase 3 by mid-June.  Is that a typo? Do they mean mid-July?

I don’t think now is the time we want to re-open.  We just saw thousands and thousands of protestors not social distancing and many not wearing masks.   This is not the time to re-open.  Everyone, please understand that a virus is indifferent to anyone’s personal feelings or beliefs.  Now is not the time to re-open.  We need testing at a mass scale, more than before.  Only then can we have any level of confidence of where we are at with coronavirus in our community.

Don’t go. I didn’t break quarantine rules for the last 2 months only to get locked up again due to protestors who broke quarantine. Not working out during this time is not healthy. Esp since lifting and cardio has been my life style for the last 28 yrs.

Sweet!  It hurts me to say that it doesn’t seem covid proof, but they should try their best.  I’m 31 and been part of the YMCAs system from a child. WS Y’s pretty cramped compared to others around the county and city.  It’s one of the older Y’s despite the capitol facelift & upgrade a handful of years ago.  The air ventilation situation is less than ideal – there’s no open windows in the workout area.  I can’t imagine the dry & wet saunas or hot tub being usable which was a huge physical and social draw (hopefully not closed permanently forever).  Your best bet is to get there at 5-7am or 8-9pm for optimal social distancing.I think the WS Y will be able to pull off a childcare situation for the mid morning momma’s to workout or break and keep the kiddos engaged and safe.  Im somewhat encouraged by that.

Normal is not normals any longer. And as challenging and demanding as this virus has been and will continue to be, a new normal is being created with some unexpected benefits. I have witnessed many groups of people working out together at various locations. Now more than before, I see people interacting more than ever before,  So, yes the Y will be open soon, and maybe things will start to look somewhat normal again. But not to normal I hope. I think some of the changes that have occurred, have brought people closer together, and that in and of itself is a very health thing, even if it is six feet apart. See you at the Y!

Sorry, comment time is over.
