The American Red Cross of southwest Georgia will spend Saturday installing smoke alarms in a handful of Albany neighborhoods.

Executive Director Andy Brubaker says the group will visit a neighborhood around Morningside Elementary and Oak Grove Estates.

The Red Cross will not only install the smoke detectors, but also educate homeowners on having a fire safety plan.

Brubaker says it's all about making sure a family is prepared before disaster strikes.

"It's about providing education to that family or to the homeowners so that they know how to respond when there is a fire, when that smoke alarm goes off," said Brubaker.

The Red Cross is looking for volunteers to help out on Saturday.

If you'd like to join in, Brubaker is asking volunteers to meet at 500 Pine Avenue at 9 a.m. Saturday.

If you're in need of a smoke alarm, you can call the American Red Cross at 229-436-4845. Brubaker says the group does four to five installation events a year.
