HARTLAND (WGME) -- Town leaders in Hartland say they are taking steps to stop a rat infestation that has been plaguing their community.

For months, residents on Blake Street say garbage and manure left out at one home have attracted dozens of rats.

Neighbors say they've been bitten and they are worried about what's next.

“In April, we noticed a lot of rats. We were seeing them. Then it got to the point you could go out and watch them in pack play. I ended up getting bit. My dog has been bit three times,” said Hartland resident Michelle Cole.

Neighbors took their concerns to the town council at a meeting Monday.

The town manager and attorney insist they are working on a plan to get rid of the rats. They say one of the issues is it's not clear if the property has been abandoned.
