RICHMOND (WGME) -- Police say the death of a Richmond man is a homicide, and they're asking for the public's help to solve the case.

A friend discovered 48-year-old Andrew Sherman's body inside his home on Kimball Street earlier this month.

The owner of The Old Goat, a bar in Richmond, says he knew Sherman well.

He was surprised to hear the news of his death.

"He was a great trivia master," The Old Goat Owner Scott McIntire said.

McIntire was friends with Sherman for more than a decade.

He says Sherman ran trivia and movie nights at his bar for several years.

"He used to like to barter things, he would collect old beer memorabilia and try to trade me for his pizza tab, and stuff like that," McIntire said.

McIntire hadn't seen Sherman since July.

He says he was in a bad car accident and in a lot of pain.

"He had actually been talking a lot about having his leg amputated, and they couldn't manage it, which I think is a pretty drastic decision to be like, ‘Yeah, please take my leg,’" McIntire said.

Maine State Police say Sherman lived alone.

His body was discovered by a friend who hadn't heard from him in a few days.

Detectives spent several days investigating at his home and analyzing evidence.

"My impressions were that he was very thoughtful, very kind, caring about others and you know, would go out of his way to help another person," acquaintance Seth Berry said.

Detectives are looking to talk to anyone who had seen or talked to Sherman since September 25.

"He was a harmless man. A good-natured guy. A generous person, so you know, he wasn't anyone who I think anyone wanted to see dead," McIntire said. "I hope they catch the person that did it and put them to justice, and I hope that justice is served."

Detectives with Maine State Police have interviewed Sherman's family and friends.

They're asking if you have any information to give them a call.
