CHICAGO — After 52 years in business, Stanley’s Fresh Fruits & Vegetables has closed its doors.

There was a sign on store’s window that says the business is closed for remodeling.

It started as a remodeling job but owners realized by late Sunday they didn’t have the money to open up again.

Stanley’s nephew Anthony Panagerious said his uncle is having some health problems and they just couldn’t keep up with the competition.

“(They were ) trying to do some refinancing to keep it afloat.  Unfortunately they just decided it was time to close it,” he said.  “It just came to its course.  We just decided we can’t do it anymore.

Employees were told to come back Wednesday to get their last check.
