PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man who repeatedly allowed his mother with dementia to wander away from their home has been sentenced to serve two years in prison.
Carlton Vose, 50, of Pawtucket, was sentenced this week to five years in prison, with two to serve and the remainder suspended with probation. He was also ordered to attend counseling to have no contact with his mother, The Providence Journal reported.
Vose was convicted by a jury in December of six counts of criminal neglect of an adult with severe impairments, according to Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office.
Six times she was found wandering outside, unable to identify where she was or return home, police said, including one time in January 2015 when she was found outside a drugstore in her bath robe.
Vose told authorities that his mother repeatedly refused nursing home care.
