FITCHBURG, MASS. (WHDH) - A major storm dumped a foot of snow in Fitchburg overnight.

Plows could be seen clearing the streets as residents grabbed their shovels to remove snow from their sidewalks and steps.

The storm caused slick conditions on the roadways, prompting officials to cancel school.

The streets remained slippery and slushy, and many planned to stay off the road as the storm continues to pummel the city.

Around 9 p.m. Monday night, about 3 inches had accumulated on top of what was left behind.

As more wind-driven snow falls across the city, sidewalks, staircases, and cars that were once clear were covered again.

Classes at Fitchburg State University were canceled and students say they are hoping this second round of storms will extend an already long weekend.

Valerie Ramos planned to take advantage of the snow day.

“[We have] cookies, soup, cereal, hot chocolate,” she said. “We’re going to have a snow day in with hot cocoa and snacks and probably Netflix all day.”

“We’re hoping for another snow day,” another said. “Fingers crossed.”

For the younger students, Fitchburg public school officials have already called a two-hour delay ahead of Tuesday’s wintery cleanup.
