A Windsor man faces a robbery charge after a vigilant resident reported suspicious behaviour at an east-end business Thursday.

At around 1 p.m., patrol officers with the Windsor Police Service responded to a business located in the 3600 block of Tecumseh Road East — near Central Avenue — for a report a robbery had just occurred.

A male suspect had reportedly entered a store and taken jewelry from a display case, police said in a news release on Friday. An employee tried to stop the suspect, and a physical altercation ensued.

The suspect fled the area on foot with the jewelry. The employee received what police described as “non-life threatening injuries.”

Police viewed video surveillance and obtained a description of the suspect.

Roughly 45 minutes later, patrol officers responded to the 3300 block of Ypres Avenue for a report of a suspicious person trying on jewelry, police said. Officers arrived and located a man who matched the description of the robbery suspect.

The man was arrested without incident.

Officers found all of the stolen jewelry in the suspect’s possession and returned it to the first businesses.

Tyler Williams, a 26-year-old from Windsor, is charged with robbery.

“This incident is a great reminder to the public to call police if you observe any suspicious behaviour in the community,” police said. “The suspicious person call led to a very quick apprehension and the recovery of stolen items which otherwise may have not been recovered.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Windsor police at 519-255-6700 ext. 4830, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-258-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.catchcrooks.com.
