UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan lawmakers are currently hard at work to make the roads safer for drivers by minimizing distracted driving.
HB 4198, introduced by Rep. Triston Cole, R-Mancelona, would prevent minors from using a phone while driving, as well as expand laws prohibiting texting while driving.
“Right now in Michigan, it is illegal to text and drive,” Cole said. “However, it is not illegal to shop on Ebay, to post on Instagram, scan your Facebook page and that type of thing. We are closing that loophole.”
Cole adds that stricter laws need to be implemented to make roads safer.
“You will be able to use a navigation system and hands-free devices, but we need to take distracted driving off of the road and put it where it should be,” Cole said. “Out where you’re stationary, legally parked on the side of the road, or not in your vehicle at all so we can keep more of our drivers safe in Michigan.
Over 600 instances of distracted driving were reported in Kalamazoo County alone in 2017.
The bill is currently being reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee.
