NC COVID-19 update: Governor announces state will stay in modified Phase 2

As of Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, North Carolina health officials say there have been a total of 129,288 lab-confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state, an increase of 1,127 cases from Tuesday's report. In addition, the state reports 2,050 virus-related deaths and 1,167 individuals are currently hospitalized.

The state reports there are 105,093 presumed recoveries as of Monday, August 3, 2020. This data is expected to be updated by 4 p.m. each Monday. Click here to learn more about presumed recoveries.

On Wednesday, Governor Roy Cooper announced the state will remain in its modified "Safer at Home" Phase 2 for five weeks.

The governor's extended version of Phase 2, "Safer at home" was set to expire this upcoming Friday, Aug. 7. The modified version of Phase 2 was announced on the same day as plans for the upcoming school year.

“As we continue to see rising case numbers and hospitalizations, we will stay in Safer At Home Phase 2 for three more weeks,” Governor Cooper said on July 14. “Our re-opening priority is the school building doors, and in order for that to happen we have to work to stabilize our virus trends.”

The modified phase kept bars, nightclubs, gyms and other indoor facilities closed with some exceptions. Phase 3's plan allows larger gatherings of people and increased capacity for some business.
