Campaigners claim Worcester is a remain city

Worcester Editorial 14th Jun, 2019   0

A LEADING campaign group calling for a meaningful vote on the final Brexit deal has claimed the recent EU election results revealed a ‘clear majority’ for pro-EU parties.

Worcestershire for Europe issued the claims after the Liberal Democrats and Green Party led the way in claiming a 40.5 per cent share of the vote in the poll.

Other pro-EU parties including Change UK and nationalist parties SNP and Plaid Cymru were also included in the tally.

A total of 37.3 per cent of the vote went to the Brexit Party and UKIP, two parties in favour of a ‘no deal’ Brexit and despite Nigel Farage’s party topping the poll, chair Stuart Thomson said the verdict was clear.

“We were delighted that 40.5 per cent of the vote share went to parties committed to remaining in the EU, whilst 37.3 per cent went to those in favour of a No Deal Brexit,” he said.

“As polls and our canvassing have shown in recent months, Worcester is now a remain city and Robin Walker MP would be well advised to represent us as such.

“Of course, opinion is divided but it would be a travesty if this result was used by the far right to force a destructive, jobs-wrecking no deal on a country which has rejected it,” he added.

The group didn’t include the voting share for the Conservatives and Labour, two parties which have pledged to take the UK out of the European Union to respect the 2016 referendum result.

“In June 2016, the British people narrowly voted for the easy Brexit that was promised. Three years later, it’s absolutely clear there is no such thing as an easy Brexit, so the people must have a say on the reality,” he added.
