The call came in around 11:50 p.m. Thursday.

Police say a man, identified as 19-year-old Nate A. Evans of Williamsburg, was found dead at the scene with apparent gunshot wounds.

Evans was a football player and student at William & Mary, the college said in a statement. Though he had not yet declared a major, he was interested in a career in public or global health and aspired to major in Kinesiology.

“Last night, the William & Mary family lost one of our own, with the tragic passing of football student-athlete Nate Evans," said William & Mary Athletics Director Samantha Huge. "Our university and Athletics Department are part of a tight knit community, and Nate's loss will be felt deeply. We have provided university counselors and psychologists to support Nate’s teammates, coaches and friends. Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with Nate's family and friends during this difficult time.”

“Nate’s is a loss we are feeling deeply within our program," said William & Mary Head Football Coach Mike London. "Faith and family are the foundations of our program. We value relationships first. Our team has gathered together to support each other as we deal with the grief that comes from this tragedy. Additionally, we will do all we can to support and comfort Nate’s family and loved ones through this difficult time.”

"William & Mary grieves today the death of Nate Evans, an immensely talented young man. I extend condolences and the deepest sympathy on behalf of the community to Nate's family, friends, team members and others close to him," said William & Mary President Katherine A. Rowe.

Witnesses told News 3 they heard multiple gunshots before a swarm of police arrived.

No funeral or memorial arrangements have been announced as of Friday, the school said. A campus-wide gathering is being planned for Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. on the football field at Zable Stadium.

This is Norfolk's second homicide of the year.
