The last Flag City Honor Flight of 2019 took off from Toledo Express Airport today.

80 veterans are given a free trip to Washington D.C., accompanied by a personal guardian and Flag City Honor Flight organizers.

The group will tour the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam memorials, and watch the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier at Arlington Cemetary.

Robert Janes Sr. was a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam war. A Swanton native, he took the Honor Flight in 2014 and has since come back to be part of the color guard.

"I lost quite a few helicopter pilots that I personally knew over there," recollects Janes. "Their names are on the wall. And walking around the other monuments was a good experience."

The trips are made possible by generous donations from various organizations, businesses, and other individuals through fundraisers.

The group is scheduled to return to Toledo Express Airport tonight at approximately 9:45 PM. The community is invited to a welcome-home ceremony at the Grande Aire Hangar.
