More Virginia Beach public schools to implement full-day kindergarten

Virginia Beach City Public Schools will start full-day kindergarten at 14 additional elementary schools.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — During the 2019-2020 school year, 14 more public schools in Virginia Beach will make the move to full-day kindergarten. It's part of a multiyear plan to transition all Virginia Beach City Public Schools elementary schools from half-day to full-day kindergarten.

The following schools will make the transition in the fall: Birdneck, Brookwood, Centerville, Christopher Farms, Fairfield, Green Run, Linkhorn Park, Luxford, North Landing, Pembroke, Shelton Park, Strawbridge, Tallwood and Three Oaks.

Once these schools move to full-day kindergarten, VBCPS will have 45 schools across the division offering full-day kindergarten classes in the fall.

This is the third round of phased-in expansion using local funds as well as federal Title I grants.

The additional full-day schools were selected based on current sections of pre-kindergarten, extended day kindergarten, literacy benchmark data, socioeconomic data, and other unique site factors.

Parents of rising kindergarteners enrolled at these identified schools will receive information from school principals in the coming weeks about the program, school hours and student schedules.
