19-year-old rescued after cliff fall near Salmon Creek in Lansing
Rescuers were called to the scene about 2:30pm Wednesday after a 19-year-old fell off a cliff and landed about 20 feet down near Salmon Creek in the Ludlowville Park area of Lansing.
Lansing Fire Department, Tompkins County Sheriff, and Bangs Ambulance responders arrived at the scene, and a Lansing chief called for the Ithaca Fire Department’s rope rescue team.
According to a release from IFD, Lansing EMS and Bangs paramedics made their way to the patient and began medical care. They would be unable to bring the victim up the way they came down due to challenging terrain, so Ithaca and Lansing firefighters rappelled down into the creek bed.
The young man “was secured into a rescue basket and hauled up and out of the ravine by other firefighters at the top,” according to the release. Paramedics treated the injured man in a waiting Bangs Ambulance, and he was then flown to Upstate Medical in Syracuse by a LifeNet helicopter.
After the two-hour rescue, Ithaca and Lansing firefighters too the opportunity to “remind everyone to stay on marked paths and be aware of your surroundings. Areas that were once solid, after the freezing and thawing of winter, can become unstable and dangerous. Stay in safe, designated open areas and hike with a partner. Always know where you are and carry a cell phone in case of an emergency.”
