ELKHORN, Neb. (KMTV) — If you're worried about gaining that COVID-19 weight, Crossfit Elkhorn is open.

"We focus on functional movements so use barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells," said co-owner Trevor Baxter. "We use a lot of our body weight stuff, we use gymnastics stuff like pullups, pushups, burpees; we like to mix in running, rowing, different aerobics stuff."

In mid-March, gyms were told they could stay open, but with no more than 10 people there at a time.

"We went from a big class size of 25 people; we had to quickly drop it down to 10 people."

Since May, they've been able to have up to 25 people or 50% capacity, whichever is greater.

The gym has an app in which members can sign up for classes, which Baxter says kept the changes organized.

"Up to this moment, members were already reserving spots for classes," Baxter said. "When everything happened so quickly, all we had to do in the back office was adjust our schedule. So what we used to have was a 5 am class and a 6 am class, just for an example. And then we added a 15 minute gap so we went from 5 am to 6:15, so that 15 minutes gap allows us to get a little break to clean all the equipment that we needed to clean up, give it chance for people to get out of here and then be ready for that next class."

They've also placed Crossfit Elkhorn logos on the ground to mark spaces with enough social distancing for each member.

"We also try to limit the number of equipment that we use in our workouts so that way we weren't spending 20 extra minutes trying to get things cleaned up, so we try and pay attention to what we are using," Baxter said.

Baxter says they also do outdoor workouts to give athletes more space, and he requires all athletes to sanitize their hands before and after workouts and stay home if they're sick.

"If they're not feeling very well, or maybe they took a trip, they send us a message right away," Baxter said. "Or maybe someone at their work, or at their job, got tested for COVID, and they will message us and say, 'Hey, I had a co-worker that tested positive. I'm going to stay home for the next two weeks.' So we've had super responsible members, because this is their home. This crossfit gym is their home, and they want to take of not only them, but this place."
