Law enforcement agencies across Arkansas are cracking down on speeding drivers this week.Officers are working overtime shifts and regular patrols are making a special effort to stop drivers who don't obey the speed limit."Speeding translates into injury and death on our roadways," Col. Bill Bryant, Director of Arkansas State Police, was quoted as saying in a press release. "It greatly reduces a driver's ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object on the roadway or an unexpected change in the highway, such as a sharp curve."Speeding was a contributing factor in more than 9,700 deaths in the United States in the 2017 calendar year, according to the release.The special operation is called "Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine." It started Monday, July 15 and runs through Sunday, July 21.
