Northern Michigan in Focus: Beaver Island Fishing Tournament

The folks on Beaver Island always manage to find a way to have a good time, and this last weekend was no different.

Corey Adkins explains in this week’s Northern Michigan in Focus how a 10-year-old girl still remains champion of the island.

“We are in Lake Geneserath for the fourth annual Lake Geneserath Ice Fishing Tournament here on Beaver Island,” said Levi Connor.

It was a beautiful weekend on the south end of Beaver Island.

“We got tons of food all over the place, it’s gorgeous, the weather is calm, the sun is shining. It’s beautiful out,” said Levi.

On the ice there was quite a competition going on. Meet last year’s kids champ, Sophie McDonough!

“The focus is the kids. We’re trying to get the kids out doing outdoor things, get off of the inside TV stuff, get out here and enjoy what Michigan has to offer,” explained Levi.

Sophie wasn’t spearing, but she sure was catching them.

It was time to weigh in.

“5 lbs. 5 oz. It’s No. 1right now, that’s the number one fish at the moment right now,” said Levi.

She was doing much better than the adults!

“First place for Pike is Gayle. A 1 lbs. 15 oz. pike. You win round-trip plane tickets from Island Airways and $100 cash, congratulations!”

And for the second year in a row…

“We got the 1st place prizes, which is a bucket full of fishing gear, lures and stuff along with round-trip plane tickets on Island Airways and $100 cash.  That is all for you right there. Congratulations on the big win, Sophie!” announced Levi.

All in all the fishing wasn’t that stellar, but that doesn’t matter. It’s just a lot of fun getting outside and having fun with one another.

“That concludes the 2019 Beaver Island Fishing Tournament, I want to thank everybody for coming and eating, I’m glad everybody came and had fun,” said Levi.
