WASHINGTON — Santa Fe immersive art experience Meow Wolf is on its way to the nation's capital.

Cofounder and CEO Vince Kadlubek said the Washington, D.C., tourism industry, number of young residents and progressive political leanings contributed to Meow Wolf's decision to expand there.

"Our intergalactic, transmedia story is rooted in a community of underdogs who overcome 'The Powers That Be,' and we will have something really special for all the fellow underdogs who seek a transformative experience," Kadlubek said of the new space, which is set to open in 2022, in a statement.

The 75,000-square-foot, three-level facility will be located in the Fort Totten area, according to a news release. Kadlubek declined to disclose financial details for the project, but said it is being funded in part by its developer, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
