More than 600 guns have been removed from the streets of Harrisburg over the last three years. The Bureau of Police on Friday displayed more than 50 guns, a fraction of the 198 confiscated in 2018.

Police said most of the guns were retrieved through arrests and probation checks; some were thrown out of cars.

Commissioner Thomas Carter said police have been very successful with the help of the ATF, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Dauphin County district attorney’s office.

Thomas added that violent crime is down by 10 percent.

“The people of Harrisburg deserve better than to worry about getting their property shot up,” he said. “My officers deserve better than to worry about getting hit by random gunfire.”

Carter said most stolen guns recovered have come from outside the city. Police try to return those guns to their owners. Otherwise, the guns are destroyed.
